Why U.S. cities are becoming more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians
Why U.S. cities are becoming mora dangerous for cyclists and pedestriansWhy U.S. cities are becoming mora dangerous for cyclists and pedestriansAs cities strive to improve the quality of life for their residents, many are working to promote walking and biking. Such policies make sense, since they can, in the long run, lead to less traffic, cleaner air and healthier people. But the results arent all positive, especially in the short to medium term.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn Washington D.C., for example, traffic fatalities as a whole declined in 2018 compared to the year before, but the number of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths increased by 20 percent. Pedestrian deaths also have risen in New York, and pedestrian and cycling fatalities have increased in denn man tau Angeles in the past several years.Across the nation, cyclist fatalities have increased by 25 percent since 2 010 and pedestrian deaths have risen by a staggering 45 percent. More people are being killed because cities are encouraging residents to walk and bike, but their roads are still dominated by fast-moving vehicular traffic. As my research has shown, this shifting mix can be deadly.Cyclists walk their bikes through a downtown Los Angeles intersection on a car-free day in parts of the city, Oct. 18, 2015.AP Photo/Richard VogelThe long decline in traffic fatalitiesFrom a long-term perspective, traffic fatalities in the United States are declining. In the early 1970s, almost 55,000 Americans were killed in traffic accidents yearly, including people in vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. By 2017 that figure had fallen to around 40,000, even with an increase in the number of vehicle miles driven. The overall decline is a confirmation of Smeeds Law, named after R.J. Smeed, a scholar at the United Kingdoms Road Research Laboratory. Smeed found that initially, with the early introduction of mo tor vehicles, traffic deaths tend to rise. Around the world, almost 1.35 million people die each year in traffic accidents, but 93 percent of those fatalities occur in low- and middle- income countries where mass vehicle usage is a recent phenomenon. As manufacturers produce safer vehicles, cities improve roads and drivers become more adept, fatalities tend to decline. But Smeeds Law only seems to hold up for people in cars notlage for other road users.A global status report shows that road traffic injuries are now the single biggest cause of death for children and young adults, and that more than half of all traffic deaths are pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. In the United States, driver fatalities fell from 27,348 in 2006 to 23,611 in 2017, but pedestrian and cyclist fatalities increased from 5,567 to 6,760.Lower-density cities that are heavily car-dependent, such as Phoenix, tend to be more dangerous for pedestrians. The vehicle-centric cityModern U.S. cities are designe d largely for motor vehicles. At the turn of the 20th century, people and cars shared city streets, which served as places for children to play, adults to walk and neighbors to meet. From the 1900s to the early 1930s a battle was fought as motor vehicles became increasingly dominant. As traffic fatalities rose, angry mobs dragged reckless drivers from their cars, and some cities printed murder maps showing where people had been killed in traffic. However, automotive interests won out. From the 1950s forward, city streets schwefellost their conviviality. Roads were engineered for fast-moving and unhindered vehicular traffic, with few pedestrian crossings or bike lanes.Even today, motorists in many cities are able to turn onto streets at intersections where pedestrians are also crossing. Most pedestrians and bicyclists are killed or injured while they are obeying the law.A new Wild WestIn the 21st century, a new city ideal has emerged of a more bike-friendly, walking-oriented city. But piecemeal implementation of bike lanes, pedestrianized zones and traffic calming measures often just adds to the confusion. Many bike lanes and pedestrianized zones only extend for short distances. Most American drivers have yet to fully appreciate that urban streets are to be shared. And even in the best of times, cars and trucks are not good at sharing the road. Vehicle drivers are often moving too fast to identify and respond to pedestrians and bicyclists. Blind spots for drivers can be death traps for other road users. Then theres the asymmetry. Drivers are operating fast-moving lethal weapons, and are encased in a protective shield. And speed literally kills. A car hitting a pedestrian at 36 to 45 mph per hour is four times more likely to cause death than a vehicle traveling between 26 to 30 mph.Adding to the dangers are distracted drivers and pedestrians and the introduction of electric scooters. Some observers also believe an epidemic of narcissism is causing more aggressive d riving. All of these factors are making walking and bicycling more dangerous. While pedestrian deaths in Norway declined by 37 percent from 2010 to 2016, in the United States they increased by 39 percent. Non-driver traffic fatalities are increasing in the United States at higher rates than most other wealthy nations.Large trucks turning right are particularly dangerous for cyclists.A better visionVision Zero, a strategy first proposed in Sweden in 1997, imagines cities with no traffic fatalities or serious injuries. At least 18 U.S. cities and states have signed on to reach that goal by 2024, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C.Strategies vary from one city to another. Boston, for example, has reduced the city speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 mph. Washington D.C. is improving 36 intersections that pose threats to pedestrians and enacting more bicycle-friendly policies. These cities still have far to go, but they are moving in the right directi on.There are many more options. Manufacturers can make vehicles less threatening to pedestrians and bicyclists by reducing the height of front bumpers. And cities can make streets safer with a combination of speed limit reductions, traffic calming measures, road diets for neighborhoods that limit traffic speed and volume, and better education for all road users.Initiatives to create more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly infrastructure should also be sensitive to social and class differences that may shape local priorities. And advocates contend that shifting to autonomous vehicles could make streets safer, although the verdict is still out on this claim. The most radical shift will require not only re-engineering urban traffic, but also reimagining our cities. In my view, we need to think of them as shared spaces with slower traffic, and see neighborhood streets as places to live in and share, not just to drive through at high speed.John Rennie Short, Professor, School of Public Poli cy, University of Maryland, Baltimore CountyThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Chief Experience Officer Job and Salary
Chief Experience Officer Job and SalaryChief Experience Officer Job and SalaryMobile devices are dominating the technological landscape, and busy consumers are leading increasingly connected lives that allow them to interact with companies and brands both online and offline. As a result, more businesses are placing focus on the customer experience (or CX) to ensure shoppers and clients are satisfied and keep coming back. This trend has led to the development of one of todays most in-demand executive roles - the chief experience officer (CXO).In practical terms, CX is the overall feeling or opinion a consumer has based on the total of their interactions with all facets of a brand or organization, from absatzwirtschaft strategies and mobile apps to untersttzung services and brick-and-mortar stores. The customer experience starts at the time advertising is first encountered and continues until a product or service is purchased or engaged and - in some cases - is no longer needed. It is the responsibility of the chief experience officer to ensure each step of the buyers journey and customer life cycle is positive, user friendly and productive. The role of the chief experience officer is new to the C-suite, having only begun to emerge in recent years. That newness can mean dynamic responsibilities, making for an exciting career thats both challenging and rewarding. Are you interested in someday becoming a CXO? Read on to learn what you need to know, from the requirements of the job to earning potential.Duties and expectationsChief experience officers must continually evaluate business practices, methods and strategies to improve customer interactions. They must boost the overall impression of and trust in a company, business or brand.Specific duties in a typical chief experience officer job description includeOverseeing a team of planers, developers and researchers dedicated to improving user experienceEmphasizing to employees and internal teams the importance of u nderstanding consumers and their motivations, the ease of their encounters and their takeawaysFostering an understanding throughout the organization of the buyers journey and customer life cycleWorking across marketing channels to develop and launch campaigns that help improve customer satisfaction, loyalty and brand imageAdvocating for consumer needs in the development and deployment of projects and strategies throughout the organizationMeasuring and tracking acquisition, retention and overall customer sentimentFostering positive CX through employee experiencesFactors such as advertising and online interactions are not the only touchpoints that influence consumers. There is also the experience they have when working directly with a companys employees - either in person, over the phone or in online chats handled by humans. Since CXOs want these encounters to be positive for the consumer, they try to enrich the employee experience at their firms. The CXO does this by ensuring employ ees are engaged, satisfied and hopefully even passionate about the companys products and services so that this spirit comes across when working with customers.Theres another, perhaps roundabout, way the CXO can enhance the employee experience. As they advise other departments in the customer experience aspects of digital transformation, they play a role in technology taking over routine jobs and freeing up employees to focus on more complex initiatives. This can boost employee satisfaction as staff are increasingly allowed to apply their own unique set of skills, knowledge and talents to their work.Experience and skillsUnsurprisingly, a strong marketing background is a must in order to thrive as a CXO. Most employers will require a masters degree in marketing, public relations, business administration or a similar field, along with at least 10 years of relevant work experience.Additionally, CXO candidates must possess a complete understanding of the buyers journey and customer life cycle, as well as a proven record of being able to optimize and enhance the consumer experience. Many chief experience officers will play a role in the management of digital assets - like e-commerce sites and apps - and should have solid working knowledge of web development best practices. CXOs must be comfortable conceptualizing improvements and translating their ideas to design and development teams.Experience across various digital marketing channels - including email, social media and display advertising - is often required. Depending on the industry, a background in more traditional marketing and advertising methods, such as direct mail, television and radio may be a plus.Along with these technical competencies, chief experience officers should possess common soft skills, including exemplary written and verbal communication abilities, leadership prowess, an aptitude for problem solving and expertise in multitasking to keep up with project demands.Chief experience officer sal aryWhile the chief experience officer job is a relatively new lage, the growing demand for this role has resulted in significant earning potential. So, what can you expect to make as a CXO? The midpoint base salary for a chief experience officer is around $165,000, though this can vary depending on experience, location and company size. In some cases, these executives may earn up to $198,000 per year.High demand now, higher demand laterThe management of the consumer experience - and by extension, employee experience - may be relatively new to the executive table, but the CXO position is likely to last. As the emphasis on customer satisfaction rises, companies will continue to rely on talented professionals who understand consumer needs and motivations and can develop business strategies that retain customers, increase sales and grow the bottom line.Watch this video to find out more about how digital transformation is impacting creative teams and professionals.

Why Face-to-Face Workplace Communication Is So Vital in the Digital Era
Why Face-to-Face Workplace Communication Is So Vital in the Digital Era Why Face-to-Face Workplace Communication Is So Vital in the Digital Era From the coworker who is constantly getting dings on their phone to our cultures obsession with social media, theres good reason for the growing concern regarding the way we engage with digital tools to communicate in the workplace. In fact, much of the technology designed to make us more productive in the professional world can actually do the exact opposite. For starters, instantaneous communication can make it challenging for employees to concentrate on one task at a time, especially if they are frequently being interruptedby an endless flow of texts, emails, and phone calls. In addition, while digital communication tools can help us increase productivity and boost efficiency at work, our escalating and intense relationship with this technology can send us down the road to bad habits - especially if this technology starts to replace mensc henwrdig interaction. In 2016, Randstad askedemployees around the globe whether technology helps or hinders their ability to relate to and build relationships with colleagues. More than half of the respondents said they feel technology makes them feel less connected to people in the real world, and89 percentsaid face-to-face meetings were the best way to interact with others at work. The Paradoxical Way Communication Technology Hinders CommunicationAs an author, communication expert, and international speaker, I firmly believe our reliance on technology at work can be a hindranceto effective communication, especially if it ends up as a complete substitute for face-to-face interaction.Smartphones, tablets, and computers have all contributed to a reduction in the number of face-to-face interactions we have with our coworkers, managers, and clients. It is much easier to send a quick text or email than it is to actually take the time and effort to talk to someone in personfor even a few m inutes. While this approach is clearly advantageous with regard to efficiency, there is value to the face-to-face dialogue that seems to be turning into a lost art. We tend to build better relationships with each other, and our customers, viadirect, in-person interactions. If we want our work environments to promote creativity, collaboration, and effective communication, we must approach digital workplace policies with a top-down strategy. After all, management platzdeckchens the tone for what is - and what is not - acceptable.Todays geschftliches miteinander leaders must create cultures of transparency regarding how and when mobile devices can be used in the office. They must help employees understand that while digital communication tends to be more efficient, face-to-face interaction is still the most powerful way to achieve business goals.Being in the presence of other people allows us to hear what they are really saying. We can read and assess their body language, nonverbal cue s, and emotional state, and we formulate appropriate responses. With face-to-face communication,we can also minimize misunderstandings and provide more opportunities for clarification.Furthermore, communicating with colleagues and clients in person allows us to exhibit more genuine reactions and use our own body language as a cue for others. It also helps develop more trusting and meaningful connections.Finding the Right BalanceIt is important to understand that even the best technology and digital communication tools are only as effective as the people using them.At the end of the day, communication still requires input from humans - and it always will if we want to do it successfully. Finding a healthy balance of how and when your employees utilize digital tools versus in-person communication ultimately depends on your ability as a manager to set clear boundaries and communicate expectations company-wide.The bottom line The more transparent and engaged each employee is on a perso nal level, the easier it will be to promote a healthy mix of digital habits and face-to-face communication in the long run.Ulrich Kellerer is an inspirational business leader, international speaker, and mental health activist. Fix Your Personal Branding Strategy in 30 Minutes -The Muse
Fix Your Personal Branding Strategy in 30 Minutes -The MuseFix Your Personal Branding Strategy in 30 MinutesYoure ready to make a career move- maybe youre looking for a new job, launching a side business, or eyeing a promotion. In all of ansicht instances, boosting your personal brand can help you achieve your goal. Thats because a strong personal brand is a carefully designed message thats compelling and attracts the right people. It helps you stand out for who you are and what you do best.Youre probably nodding along, because you already know all of this. You dont need to be convinced how valuable personal branding is Whats holding you back is the time commitment. Thats why you have a LinkedIn Profile, even though you havent updated it since you set it up. After all, who can devote hours each week on top of working or job searching? Well, believe it or not, 30 minutes is all you need to take your efforts to the next level. Heres how to spend themMinutes 1-10 Evaluate What Makes You Stand OutThe first thing you want to do is perform a self-assessment. This step is often overlooked, but itll be super helpful as you find your voice in a sea of professionals with similar experience. This evaluation helps you have a clear geistesbild of your USP, or unique selling proposition, which is just a fancy term for the value you offer to your target audience. Here are some questions to get you startedWhat are you passionate about? You want to think about what excites you, and what things you truly enjoy doing. What are your core beliefs? This is important because its like a mission statement. Itll help you relay your personal approach to getting things done. What are your top four strengths? Thisll help you share what you do better than anyone else, to set you apart from the competition. Are you a good leader or a good doer- or both? This is good to know because its a way to identify and highlight the kind of roles that complement your strengths. What do others say about you? Ask around You may have strengths youre unaware of, or talents you need to put more emphasis on so people know they exist. To be clear, I dont expect you to answer these questions with witty taglines. This exercise is to help you target your branding efforts. So, answer the question(s) that inspire you by jotting down notes, and honestly writing what comes to mind.Minutes 10-20 Compare That to What You Already HaveNow that youve done some reflection on what you want to say, its time to see how it stacks up against whats already out there. If someone were to read your LinkedIn profile, tweets, or personal website, would they see messaging that points them toward the answers you came up with? You might be thinking Wait, I only have 10 minutes, thats not enough time to read my whole website or review my LinkedIn line by line. But, heres the thing, people who click into one of your social profiles or visit your website are probably going to spend a fraction of that time looking at it. So , you want to look for things that shout what you do. On LinkedIn, that means moving beyond filling out the basics and adding links to media, writing posts, and getting endorsements for skills. On your website, that might mean building a portfolio. On Twitter, its about not just following influencers, but composing tweets, too. This step is about comparing what you want to highlight to what you have and asking yourself Whats missing? What can I add?Minutes 20-30 Create a ScheduleTruth talk Personal branding isnt a set it and forget it kind of thing. Once youve figured out what you want your message to be and how you can share it more effectively, youre going to need to start posting- consistently. A helpful way to be consistent is to set a schedule that you can use as a guide. It shouldnt feel like a chore, but if youre anything like me, if you dont schedule it, it could get back-burnered. All I ask is that you give it 10 minutes a day Heres an example of a schedule you can start wit hMonday Make (or update) a list of people youd like to engage with more (a former manager) or simply connect with (an industry influencer). Tuesday Reach out to someone from that list. If its someone youre reconnecting with, try one of these ideas. If its a stranger, you can test out this Twitter trick, or, if youre brave, just send a cold LinkedIn invite using these templates. Wednesday Spend time looking for industry-related articles in publications popular in your field and share one. Or, alternatively, comment on someone elses post (or at a minimum, share it).Thursday Make (or update) your list of improvements youd like to make to your online presence. Break it down into baby steps. For example, you wouldnt write, Build personal site. Youd write, Look into site designers and write copy for personal site bio.Friday Spend today looking yesterdays list and knocking just one thing off. Of course, you can tailor your plan to whatever works best for you. Honestly, if you just do the f ive things above even once a month, youll see traction. Regardless of the schedule you choose, feel free to switch it up, and see what gets the best response. You wont see results overnight, but, thats OK.My final piece of advice is to avoid being misled by the term personal branding. What I mean is The most successful brands arent just about you. Take the time to know your target audience, and listening to whats on their minds as well. Genuinely connect and build relationships As best-selling author Dale Carnegie said, To be interesting, be interested.

Out of the Vortex
Out of the Vortex Out of the Vortex Out of the VortexEngineers have known about vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) for at least 500 years. Leonardo da Vinci observed them in the form of Aeolian Tones, sounds created by wind passing over a wire of the correct diameter and tension, and in the vortices swirling behind the piers of a bridge. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, John Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) and Theodore von Krmn discovered that strings in a wind move perpendicular to the flow of air. This interaction between the fluid and the structure occurs because of nonlinear resonance of cylinders or spheres through vortex-shedding lock-in. That is, the period at which vortices form and shed synchronize with the side-to-side motion of the bluff body.VIVs of circular cylinders occur over a very large range of Reynolds numbers. Experiments have shown that VIVs can be affected by the condition of the cylinder surface, vorticity in the ambient flow, and fluid conditions affecting water viscosity such as salinity and temperature.Amplifying Mechanical EnergyVIVs arent just an idle curiosity. A dramatic example of their power occurred in 1940. A newly completed bridge across the Tacoma Narrows in Washington state known to oscillate and twist during stiff winds shook itself apart after a morning of persistent motions of aboutone meter. An investigation demonstrated that the collapse was due to VIV.Because of the disruptive power of VIVs, engineers have long been interested in suppressing them in everyday objects such as car antennas, flagpoles, traffic-light posts, buildings, and cooling towers. Hundreds of patents on VIV unterdrckung are based on devices such as helical strakes, large extrusions, fairings, and weathervaning fairings.Considering the disruptive power of VIVs, its amazing that until recently, no one has tried to harness their power for something productive. At the University of Michigan, beginning in 2004 and with the help of doctoral student Kamal Rag havan, we showed the feasibility of exploiting VIVs for renewable energy. I filed for several patents in the mid-2000s (the first of which was granted in 2009), and in 2005, I started a company, Vortex Hydro Energy, with backing from the Office of Technology Transfer of the University of Michigan.Vortices created in flowing water can pull cylinders up and down with great force.VIVACE, ma non troppoOur principal invention was a hydrokinetic energy technology that we named the Vortex Induced Vibration for Aquatic Clean Energy converter (VIVACE). As we envision it, a system would consist of a three-dimensional array of long cylinders, each attached to an electrical or hydrolic power take-off system. Water flowing over the cylinders creates vortices that cause the cylinders to oscillate, and converts some of the horizontal hydrokinetic energy to mechanical energy. The attached power take-off system captures this energy and uses it to turn an electric generator.VIVACE provides many advan tages over conventional water-based power generation. The VIVACE converter doesnt need to impound water behind a dam to create a head. Water is allowed to flow freely over the cylinders. In contrast to hydrokinetic technologies the converter does not use a turbine, making it safer for aquatic life that swim past or through it. Equally important ocean currents and river flows are much more predictable and reliable than waves, wind, or solar activity. Moreover, VIVACE is scalable from low-watt through gigawatt-sized installations, where the science and engineering remain the same.VIVACE converters may be set up in any flowing water, including rivers and the undersides of semi-submersible ocean platforms.A Matter of DensityFor a given amount of infrastructure, VIVACE creates an amazing quantity of power. The comparison with wind power is illustrative as both methods capture power from a fluid. It becomes immediately apparent that wind begins with a disadvantage as, compared to flowing water, wind has a low power density. Since water is 830 times denser than air, the power density of a VIV-based device is significantly higher than for a wind turbine. Our experiments show that a VIVACE converter in water flowing at 1.3 meters per second has a power density of 185 watts per cubic meter, about 14,600 times greater than todays state-of-the-art wind farm. And unlike wind turbines, which require careful location to exploit favorable wind conditions and to avoid unfavorable interactions with humans and wildlife, a VIVACE converter can be placed in almost any type of free-flowing water. The water must be deep enough to permit the safe passage of boats, and to avoid interaction between the wake of the converter and both the surface and the riverbed or seafloor.Environmental and licensing issues must be worked out, as well as optimizing VIVACE, but we have no doubt that the converter can operate in real-life conditions as expected. Much the way that power from hydroelectric dams transformed the western U.S. during the middle part of the 20th century, we believe VIVACE has the vermgen to revolutionize the renewable power industry in this century.Adapted from Out of the Vortex, by Michael Bernitsas, University of Michigan, ASME Fellow, for Mechanical Engineering, April 2010.Considering amazing disruptive power of VIVs, its amazing that until recently, no one has tried to harness their power for good.

Family Medical Leave Guidelines for Expectant Parents
Family Medical Leave Guidelines for Expectant Parents Family Medical Leave Guidelines for Expectant Parents Just discovered that you or your significant other are expecting a baby or adopting a child soon? Congratulations! You are about to enter parenthood - one of the most exciting phases of adult life. If you or your spouse or covered same-sex partner are working presently, you may be aware that you could be eligible to take some time off to recover after the birth or to handle the details of the adoption, and to care for your new bundle of joy. You can also maintain your employee benefits during this time. The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is something you will want to ask your employer about as soon as possible to make this a smooth transition for your family. Learn About the Family Medical Leave Act The FMLA is a workplace law that enables eligible employees of covered employers to take up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid, job-protected leave for qualifying life events, such as starting a family. Eligible employees are those who work for a private employer with at least 50 employees within 75 miles, or a school or government agency, and someone who works at least 1250 hours during a 12-month period preceding the leave. That is around 24 hours per week if you worked for at least a year, so even if you work part-time or as a seasonal worker, you could be eligible for this benefit. Keep in mind that these 12 months do not need to be consecutive, so if you worked for 3 years, and then took a leave for 12 weeks, then returned to work for 7 months, you could still be approved for an FMLA leave. Also, if your private employer is not covered under FMLA, you could still be eligible under state laws. An FMLA leave may be granted if you: Are expecting the birth of a child and will be caring for the child following the birthAre in the process of placing a child for adoption or foster care, or adopting or becoming a foster parent Notifying the HR Department is Vital Itâs important to notify the human resource department at your place of employment as soon as you know you may need an FMLA leave under this arrangement. Why? This enables your employer to arrange for staffing coverage during the time that you will be out of work. It also enables your employer to coordinate your employee benefits so there is no break in coverage for you or your dependents during this time. You may notify your HR department in writing and obtain the necessary medical documentation needed to validate your requests such as a doctorâs note or lawyerâs statement on letterhead indicating your approximate leave dates and return to work date. You can ask for this to be held confidentially in your employee file. Next Steps Once You Are Granted an FMLA Leave Request Once you are approved for an FMLA leave period, you will want to contact your employee benefits administrator to find out what additional benefits or information you may need. Find out what health coverage you have, what it covers, and how you can add your new child to your policy. You will also want to coordinate your work tasks and schedule with your immediate supervisor and the human resource team. Since some of the time you are on leave may be unpaid, you will also want to talk with your human resource and benefits administrator about any paid time off or other benefits you may be entitled to, such as adoption fee reimbursement. Special Considerations for Pregnant Workers If you are pregnant and need special accommodation to make your work environment safer or more comfortable, including any schedule adjustments or requests to telecommute, you may qualify for support under the EEOC, including the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Your employer cannot terminate you or threaten your job in any way during this time. Your employer may stay in contact with you during this time, but cannot ask you to conduct business or perform work tasks during an FMLA leave. According to the EEOC, âif you are unable to perform your job due to a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth, your employer must treat you in the same way any other disabled employee is treatedâ, therefore you may also qualify for short term disability benefits. Remember, an FMLA leave is approved by state and federal workplace laws, so if you are finding it difficult to get this processed in a timely or satisfactory manner, you may contact the US Department of Labor division for your state. Be sure to learn more about your rights and responsibilities by downloading your free copy of the Family and Medical Leave Act Employee Guide.

Management Basics and the Manager Job Role
Management Basics and the Manager Job Role Management Basics and the Manager Job Role What is management? What do managers do? How do I manage? These are standard questions that most of us in the management profession have been asked more than once and they are questions we asked once in our careers, too. Here is a basic look at management- a virtual Management 101. Art and Science Management is both an art and a science. It is the art of making people more effective than they would have been without you and there is a science to how you do that. There are four basic pillars of the managers role: plan, organize, direct, and monitor. Maximize Effectiveness To illustrate the benefits of an effective manager, consider this scenario: Four workers can make 6 units in an eight-hour shift without a manager. If you are hired to manage them and they still make 6 units a day, what is your benefit to the business? On the other hand, if they now make 8 units per day, you- as the manager- have value. The same analogy applies to service, retail, teaching, or any other kind of work. Can your group handle more customer calls with you than without? Sell higher value merchandise? Impart knowledge more effectively? That is the value of management- making a group of individual workers more effective. Plan If management starts with planning, good management starts with good planning. Without a plan, you will never succeed. If you happen to make it to the goal, it will have been by luck or chance and is not repeatable. You may make it as a flash-in-the-pan- an overnight sensation- but you will never have the track record of accomplishments of which success is made. Figure out what your goal is, or listen when your boss tells you, then figure out the best way to get there. What resources do you have? What can you get? Compare the strengths and weaknesses of individuals and other resources. Look at all the probable scenarios and develop a plan for them. Figure out the worst possible scenario and plan for that, too. Evaluate your different plans and develop what, in your best judgment, will work the best and what you will do if it doesnt. TIP: One of the most often overlooked management planning tools is the most effective. Ask the people doing the work for their input. Organize Now that you have a plan, you have to make it happen. Is everything ready ahead of your group so the right stuff will get to your group at the right time? Is your group prepared to do its part of the plan? Is the downstream organization ready for what your group will deliver and when it will arrive? Find out if your workers are training and motivated and if they have the necessary equipment for following through on your plan. Your plan should include solutions for any eventuality, so prepare to have the necessary spare parts for the equipment. Ensure that purchasing has ordered the material and it is the right stuff and it will arrive in time to keep your plan on schedule. Do the legwork to make sure everything needed to execute the plan is ready to go or will be when it is needed. Check back to make sure that everyone understands their role and the importance of their role in the overall success. Direct Everything is in place and it is now time to flip the ON switch- tell people what they need to do. We like to think of this part like conducting an orchestra: Everyone in the orchestra has the music in front of them and they know which section is playing which piece and when. They know when to come in, what to play, and when to stop again. The conductor cues each section to make the music happen- thats your job here. Youve given all your musicians (workers) the sheet music (the plan), you have the right number of musicians (workers) in each section (department), and youve arranged the sections on stage so the music will sound best (you have organized the work). Now you need only to tap the podium lightly with your baton to get their attention and give the downbeat. Monitor Now that you have everything moving, you have to keep an eye on things. Make sure everything is going according to the plan and, when it isnt going according to plan, step in and adjust the plan. Problems will come up- someone will get sick; a part wont be delivered on time; a key customer will go bankrupt- but that is why you developed a contingency plan in the first place. You, as the manager, have to always be aware of whats going on so you can make any necessary adjustments. Monitoring is an iterative process- when something is out of sync, you need to plan a fix, organize the resources to make it work, direct the people who will make it happen, and continue to monitor the effect of the change. A Rewarding Experience Managing people is not easy; however, it can be done successfully and it can be a very rewarding experience. Remember that management, like any other skill, is something that you can improve at with study and practice.

Best Career Advice from Michelle Obama, Jeff Bezos more
Best Career Advice from Michelle Obama, Jeff Bezos more Best Career Advice from Michelle Obama, Jeff Bezos more 2018 was quite a year. There was no shortage of headline-making moments or reasons to grab your smartphone to instantly like, share or comment. Amongst the yearâs highs were also some very defining moments for industry titans and influential people. And along with that, pivotal moments for everyday people like you and me. Career highs and professional opportunities abounded. Looking back, we took stock of some of the best career advice of the year. Here are five people who share five gems of advice that will inspire us today and into 2019. In a recent shareholder letter , Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos borrow down two basic kinds of decisions you can make: those that are easy to reverse and those that are nearly impossible to reverse. He advises not to be paralyzed by doubt, but to clearly evaluate whatâs in front of you. âSome decisions are consequential and irreversible or nearly irreversible - one-way doors - and these decisions must be made methodically, carefully, slowly, with great deliberation and consultation. If you walk through and donât like what you see on the other side, you canât get back to where you were before. We can call these Type 1 decisions,â Bezos writes. âBut most decisions arenât like that - they are changeable, reversible - theyâre two-way doors. If youâve made a sub-optimal Type 2 decision, you donât have to live with the consequences for that long. You can reopen the door and go back through. Type 2 decisions can and should be made quickly by high judgment individuals or small groups. As organizations get larger, there seems to be a tendency to use the heavyweight Type 1 decision-making process on most decisions, including many Type 2 decisions. The end result of this is slowness, unthoughtful risk aversion, failure to experiment sufficiently, and consequently diminished invention. Weâll have to figure out how to fight that tendency.â At the first-ever Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa in December, Oprah Winfrey spoke to thousands on what would have been Nelson Mandelaâs 100th birthday. While speaking about the legacy of the former South African President and activist, Oprah shared a tidbit that we can all apply to our careers. In her speech, she said , âLet me tell you, no matter whatâs going down in your life, thereâs always somebody out there whoâs not as blessed as you have been.â Oprah continued, âIf you do even one small thing every day, youâll be building your own legacy. Because as Maya Angelou taught me: Your legacy isnât some big grand gesture thatâs waiting to happen, your legacy is every life you touch. So Iâve been fortunate to witness up close and personal that when you help someone else, your blessings return to you 10 times.â Former First Lady Michelle Obama has a track record that anyone would be envious of: Princeton University undergrad, Harvard Law School, jobs in corporate law and public service, wife, mother, and, of course, First Lady. And while it may seem like her path has been a straight one, she insists in her new book âBecomingâ that it doesnât have to be. âIn the book, I take you on the journey of who that little striving star-getter became, which is what a lot of hard-driving kids become: a box checker,â Obama tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview. âGet good grades: check. Apply to the best schools, get into Princeton: check. I wasnât a swerver. I wasnât somebody that was going to take risks,â she says. However, Obama admits she wasnât happy. âI narrowed myself to being this thing I thought I should be. It took loss- losses in my life that made me think, Have you ever stopped to think about who you wanted to be? And I realized I had not. I was sitting on the 47th floor of an office building, going over cases and writing memos. I was like, âI canât do this for the rest of my life. I canât sit in a room and look at documents.ââ So what changed? âBarack Obama taught me how to swerve,â admitted the First Lady. Winfrey chimes in, âWhat I loved about it is, it says to every person reading the book: You have the right to change your mind.â When youâre a more seasoned professional, you have experienced both the ups and the downs of professional life. You may have been laid off, fired, missed out on a promotion or made a seemingly career-defining mistake. However, Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu insists that fear should not paralyze you forever. Before directing the box-office hit, Chu directed the failed remake of 2015âs Jem and the Holograms . It scored a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and was pulled from theaters early. Getting back into the directorâs chair on the book-to-screen adaptation of the Kevin Kwan hit was daunting, needless to say. âThe fear of doing [âJemâ] again was definitely present,â he said . âI always told myself after âJem,â I donât want fear to change my choices. Fear is a destruction of creativity. Any time I had a fear about this movie I would go to that idea, donât let âJemâ determine your choices here. You were destined to be here and do this movie.â Three simple words pack a lot of punch when delivered by one of the wealthiest and most successful investors in the world. Warren Buffet shared this quick, but meaningful, insight with a start-up co-founder when asked for the advice heâd give to new graduates about to enter the workplace. Buffet responded: Invest in yourself. The chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway then continued, âThe one easy way to become worth 50 percent more than you are now at least is to hone your communication skills - both written and verbal. If you canât communicate, itâs like winking at a girl in the dark - nothing happens. You can have all the brainpower in the world but you have to be able to transmit it. And the transmission is communication.â Buffettâs advice speaks volumes. Investing in yourself and in your communication abilities can take you from 0 to 100 instantly. You will be able to deliver a better elevator pitch, answer an interview question perfectly, pitch an idea to an investor, and make the case for a raise or promotion. Take time today to internalize the advice from seasoned pros and make tomorrow your best day ever!

FBI Directors secret Twitter account shows why you have no internet privacy
FBI Director's secret Twitter account shows why you have no internet privacy FBI Director's secret Twitter account shows why you have no internet privacy On Wednesday at a leadership dinner, FBI Director James Comey dangled an irresistible carrot in front of reporters: he had recently acquired a secret Twitter account, he said, and he further let on that he had a private Instagram account with ânine followers.âWhen Comey spoke about his commitment to his own internet privacy and promised that â[n]obody is getting inâ to find him online, that challenge proved irresistible to one journalist. There is no such thing as a secret social media accountMany influential CEOs and celebrities maintain âsecretâ social media accounts. One of the most famous is the singer Adele, who has said her official account is now controlled by her managers because of her habit of âmouthyâ drunk tweeting and she now has a private account she uses to lurk. Many celebrities are rumored to have secret Facebook accounts, and hedge fund managers are said to be lurking in undisclosed Twitter accounts, where they can see financial news quietly.Letâs clear up one thing: there is no such thing as a secret social media account. If youâre on social media, youâre findable by anyone determined enough. That was the case with James Comey. We all leave digital breadcrumbs that reveal who we areGizmodoâs Ashley Feinberg described her path to discovering the FBI directorâs secret Twitter account. She started by looking up his family on Twitter, which led to his sonâs locked Instagram account. Due to Instagramâs algorithm, all it took was four hours of internet sleuthing for Feinberg to follow Brien Comeyâs Instagram to his fatherâs anonymous account, exposing @projectexile7.How Feinberg knew it was Comey: even the head of the FBI canât resist leaving breadcrumbs on social media, and he had linked his secret account to his real-life interests. Feinberg wrote there was only one Comey account that matched the FBI Directorâs description of having only nine followers: reinholdniebuhr. Hmm! Comey wrote his senior thesis on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr at the College of William and Mary. HMM!From there, the coincidences kept piling up. A tweeter using the name Reinhold Niebuhr was living at the handle @projectexile7. Project Exile was the name of a federal program to deter criminals from gun offenses that Comey helped create. This âReinhold Niebuhrâ was only following reporters covering the FBI and a notable friend of James Comey.Case closed. The FBI said it had no comment, but for me and all the Nancy Drews of the internet, the evidence was convincing enough.Comey himself has not publicly commented on his alleged outing, but according to one journalist, before @projectexile7 went underground and locked his account, he tipped his cap to Feinberg, sending her a link to the FBI job boards site. If it is Comey, the response is light and clever.https://twitter.com/samknight1/status/847607770182336512Of course, Comeyâs case has an important lesson even for those of us who donât run federal agencies: treat social media very carefully, because your colleagues, your bosses and maybe even the whole world could get to see it. There is no such thing as true privacy in a public forum. On the internet, no one knows youâre a dog- but algorithms already know everything about youYou can be the nationâs top executive in charge of protecting our cybersecurity and you can still get foiled by an algorithm. It didnât matter that the account of Comeyâs son was locked down and private. Once you sign up for social media accounts, you open up your contact lists - including family members - to their algorithms. An algorithm working under Instagramâs âopen and connectedâ mandate can innocuously reveal to others your friends and familiesâ accounts that it thinks you might want to follow. The intent is benign: like Facebook and Twitter algorithms, Instagramâs âSuggestionsâ feature is assuming we all want to be more connected with everyone.Techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci expl ains how Instagramâs business argument wars with usersâ privacy concerns: â[P]rivacy and boundaries around information are not stable- they are not stable because networks leak information; because your acts reveal deeper dynamics; because people like you give hints about what you will do; because this is all asymmetric: there is a business model, and then there is us, in the middle of all of this, connecting to one another because that is what people do.âNothing is secretComey is the latest high-profile case in a long line of people who thought they could get away with a private social media account. In 2012, an Obama aide thought he could badmouth his boss under the secret handle of @natsecwonk. For more than two years, it worked and Jofi Joseph could snarkily tweet: ââHas sh- y staff.â #ObamaInThreeWords.â But using Josephâs travel and shopping habits, the White House eventually pinned the account to Joseph and fired him. There is one notable success story: in 2 011, the National Labor Relations Board sided with an ambulance driver who got fired after she vented about her boss on Facebook. Because the woman was part of a union, the NLRB got the womanâs employer to settle and revise its âoverly broad rulesâ on employees discussing wages, hours, and working conditions outside of work. How to keep some privacy onlineThe big takeaway? Nothing is secret once posted on a public network. If you do want to protect your privacy, your best bet is not to be on social media, and certainly not to talk about your secret accounts. You can also take these steps for digital privacy endorsed by the Electronic Freedom Foundation. As James Comey himself once said, âThere is no such thing as absolute privacy in America; there is no place outside of judicial reach.â No wonder that, after Feinbergâs story came out, @projectexile7 locked his account.

The 3 Most Important People to Stay in Touch With (and How to Do It)
The 3 Most Important People to Stay in Touch With (and How to Do It) The 3 Most Important People to Stay in Touch With (and How to Do It) When it comes to networking, there are the âeasyâ people to stay in touch with. The old co-worker you still get monthly drinks with. The connections you see regularly at industry functions. Your first boss. But I probably donât have to tell you that the easy way out isnât always the best. Given the unpredictability of work (i.e., you never know when youâre going to need your connections the most) and of networking (think: the person youâre certain will open doors is on a month-long tour of Europe), staying in touch with a wide array of contacts is more important than you might think. In other words, when youâre thinking about building and fostering your network, donât simply reach out to the most obvious contacts. In particular, be sure to make time to connect with the three kinds of people below. 1. Someone Who Pushed You to Do Your Best Whether it was a coach, a professor, or an interim supervisor, someone in your past pushed you- hard. This person always called you out for phoning it in and constantly made sure you were giving your all. At first, you may be inclined to stay in touch only with those who thought you were amazing from the get-go. But think about it: The person who pushed you not only thought you were great- he or she saw that you had even more potential. And when it comes to future career opportunities? Thatâs definitely someone you want on your side. So, how should you keep in touch? This person was pushing you to be your best, so a great time to reach out is when youâre killing it- when, say, youâve earned a big promotion or received an award. Fill your contact in on your latest accomplishments, thank him or her for all the support over the years- and then ask for any advice on how you can continue to grow (because you know youâll get it). 2. A Contact Who Offered to Put in a Good Word Similarly, someone who has once put his or her neck out for you obviously knows your worth. He or she is in your corner (and, assuming you lived up to expectations, will likely recommend you again). Now the key is realizing that thereâs a difference between someone who gives you a strong reference when you ask for it- and someone who offers to put in a good word for you. The latter is the sort of person who will brainstorm with you when youâre in need of contacts in a new city or if youâre looking to change fields. Whenever you find yourself in transition, this person should be one of your first calls. Tell him or her what youâre hoping to do, and then ask if he or she has any contacts or advice. 3. The Best Assistant (or Intern) Ever Youâve probably heard you shouldnât strictly network âupâ (i.e., only with people in higher positions than you are). Because that person in a support role who knocked your socks off wonât be in a support role forever. However, while networking should happen in all directions, unless there is a strong social component- e.g., you two used to hang out outside of work- reaching out to a former supervisor can feel like imposing. Meaning, someone who worked for you in a support role is unlikely to reach out to you unless he or she needs a reference. So, as the former supervisor, you should take the lead in connecting with your former employee. Send a quick email or Facebook message to inquire how his new job is going, or bond over bumping into a colorful contact sheâll be sure to remember. When thinking about who from your past you should reconnect with, donât sell yourself short by only reaching out to former bosses. Think broadly about your past contacts, and use the tips above to expand your network. Photo of woman on phone courtesy of Shutterstock.

U.S. Military Code of Conduct, Article 6
U.S. Military Code of Conduct, Article 6 U.S. Military Code of Conduct, Article 6 Article VI I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America. Explanation: A member of the Armed Forces remains responsible for personal actions at all times. Article VI is designed to assist members of the Armed Forces to fulfill their responsibilities and survive captivity with honor. The CoC does not conflict with the UCMJ, which continues to apply to each military member during captivity or other hostile detention. Failure to adhere to the CoC may subject Service members to applicable disposition under the UCMJ. When repatriated, POWs can expect their actions to be subject to review, both as to circumstances of capture and as to conduct during detention. The purpose of such review is to recognize meritorious performance and, if necessary, investigate any allegations of misconduct. Such reviews shall be conducted with due regard for the rights of the individual and consideration for the conditions of captivity. A member of the Armed Forces who is captured has a continuing obligation to resist all attempts at indoctrination and remain loyal to the United States. The life of a POW may be very hard. POWs who stand firm and united against enemy pressures shall aid one another immeasurably in surviving this ordeal. What Military Personnel Need to Know Understand the relationship between the UCMJ and the CoC, and realize that failure to follow the guidance of the CoC may result in subsequent disposition under the UCMJ. Every member of the Armed Forces of the United States should understand that Service members may be held legally accountable for personal actions while detained.Understand that the Military Services, as prescribed in Federal law, shall take care of both the POW and dependents and that pay and allowances, eligibility and procedures for promotion, and benefits for dependents continue while the POW is detained even if the enemy does not report the Service member as being a POW and his or her status reflects missing in action. Understand the importance of military members ensuring that their personal affairs and family matters (pay, powers of attorney, wills, debt payments, and childrens schooling) are kept current through discussion, counseling or filing of documents before being exposed to risk of capture.

Here is how you can escape a life of mediocrity
Here is how you can escape a life of mediocrity Here is how you can escape a life of mediocrity Maybe you are nervous, uncertain and afraid. Perhaps youâre weighing the risks and rewards. Maybe youâre not. But you know you want a change. A different outcome.Something inside you persists, pushes and cajoles until you canât ignore it anymore. And so, throwing caution to the wind, you leap. Like a young eagle who leaves the nest for the first time, you leap. You instinctively know that the comfort of the nest isnât enough. When the fear of staying is greater than the fear of leaving, you leap.Charging that cliffThink back on the accomplishments and breakthroughs in your life. Some may have been due to good fortune and luck. But the most satisfying and meaningful growth often comes from the leap. From the aftermath of charging that cliff and throwing oneself into the abyss.Diving into the abyss is scary. At first, it may feel like youâre falling. But then, at some point you experience what the young eagle leaving the nest feels. Exhilaration. Freedom. The thrill of enterin g a whole new world. New possibilities and dreams.âLiving with fear stops us taking risks, and if you donât go out on the branch, youâre never going to get the best fruit.â - Sarah ParishCountry music artist Tim McGraw wouldnât go on stage without a drink. He needed a little âliquid courageâ to perform. But it didnât end there.Heâd get trashed and drunk-call his wife. Heâd slur. Then, to hide his inebriation, heâd text her. Except everything was misspelled, and she knew. Finally, after one last bender and hangover, he flew into Florida to start a new concert tour. And he decided to quit. He took the leap.It certainly could not have been easy. The superstar lifestyle is not conducive to sobriety. But he took the leap anyway, and never looked back. Today, he is in the best shape of his life and more successful than ever.My fear of flyingFor me, venturing outside the nest and leaping meant getting on a plane. I had a fear of flying and heights. The fear prevented me from taking trips I should have taken. Then an opportunity came to study landscape painting with renowned artist Scott L. Christensen. My wife shot down all my excuses about expenses, time away from work and upcoming obligations. She knew they were sad facades, masking the real issue. My fear of flying.Defeated, I packed my art gear, stepped on that big plane and threw caution to the wind. I hated every bump and flashing âfasten seatbeltâ sign. But then we landed in Idaho and I felt it. Exhilaration. The joy of conquering my fear. That turning point led to more painting trips to study with Christensen and significant, personal growth as an artist.Whatâs holding you back?Whatâs holding you back? Your weight? An addiction? An unhealthy relationship? Depression? Uncertainty and fear? All of these challenges have real solutions, if youâre ready to leave the nest once and for all. If youâre ready to take the leap and soar.Yes, sometimes the flight is bumpy. Sometimes itâs the wrong leap and we fall. Some falls take longer to recover from than others. But playing it safe and never leaping is its own kind of hell.An article in Rhapsodystrategies.com noted the following:âWe are inspired by people who go beyond the norm and push the boundaries of possibility. Mediocrity, on the other hand, does not inspire. Nor does it lead to greatness. Success, however you define it, will elude you unless you are willing to push the limits you have placed on yourself and that others have placed on you.âWhat a tragedy to not live boldly and pursue oneâs passions. If you want to soar, you have to leap.Nobody knows the magic bulletStart by weighing the pros and cons. Figure out what the best case and worst case scenarios are. What can you do to limit the consequences of the risk?Thereâs nothing wrong with doing your homework. But at some point, you need to take action. You need to listen to your heart. You need to take the leap.âDonât listen to anybody. Nobody knows the magic bullet. If they did, theyâd sell it and make a fortune. Follow your gut. Follow your instincts. Every once in a while, take a chance.â - Michael CudlitzItâs easier to take risks and throw caution to the wind when weâre young. When we donât have a family depending on us. But this doesnât mean we canât take risks later in life. We just need to be smart about it.They took the leapIâve known people who made major career changes. People who were unhappy in their work, but had a family to provide for. So, they didnât dive out of the nest carelessly. They took their time. They planned and prepared. They minimized the risks through proper planning and patience. But then, they took the leap. For some, the leap meant less money but more happiness. For others, the leap changed their lives for the better. For some, they stumbled, and had to regroup. But at least they tried, and learned from the effort.âCharacter cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only thr ough experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.â - Helen KellerIf you feel stuck right now, donât give up. Donât live a life of mediocrity. Meaningful change may require research, planning and patience. Be smart about it, but donât settle for your unhappiness.Youâll know when the timing is right. When youâre ready to leave the nest. When that day comes, draw a deep breath. Exhale. Then, take the leap. Feel what itâs like to soar. To finally fly, to the better future that awaits you. Before you goCartoons and tools of the trade on my desk.Iâm John P. Weiss. I paint, draw cartoons and write about life.
