9 Common Job Search Scams and How to Protect Yourself
9 Common Job Search Scams and How to Protect Yurself9 Common Job Search Scams and How to Protect YurselfHere at, we loathe job search scams and are truly interested in helping job seekers identify and steer clear of too good to be true job opportunities. CEO,Sara Sutton, started in 2007 to fight back against the frustrating- and often harmful- fraudulent schemes in thework-at-home job market. Thats why we hand-screen every single job and company before its posted our site to help job seekers stay stahlkammer and avoid job search scams. Most job search scams fall within nine common categories. Knowing how to differentiate legitimate work opportunities from harmful ones is the best way to protect yourself in your search for a flexible job. According to data collected from annual Super Survey, 13% of surveyed job seekers have encountered a job scam and 22% know of someone whos been the victim of a scam. And a whopping 82% are very concerned or somewhat concerned with encountering a job s cam. Each year the Federal Trade Commission FTC hasNational Consumer Protection Week(NCPW), which serves to help consumers make safe and informed decisions about product safety. NCPW is March 4-10 this year, and in honor of this week, were featuringnine examples of real work-at-home job scams you are likely to run into when looking for flexible work to help you stay safe while job searching. Here are nine job search scams to be aware of1. Data Entry ScamsData entry scams come in many forms, but the common theme is they promise a lot of money for a job that does not require much skill. Jobs in this category often require an upfront payment for processing or training and very rarely pay as well as advertised. There are legitimatedata entry jobsout there, but they do not advertise extravagant wages and they do not require an initial outlay of funds.Actual job posting for a data entry scamNumerous companies are looking for workers to submit information into online forms and they will pa y you nicely in return. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme but a legitimate way to earn money from home. For Full Details please read the attached .html file.2. Wire TransfersPopular among thieves, wire transfer scams move money quickly from one account to another. These transactions are difficult to reverse making it nearly impossib le to recover lost funds. Although sometimes the request for a money transfer may seem legitimate, it should always be thoroughly checked out. Scammers have been known to pose as company executives asking employees to fraudulently move money from one account to another.Actual job posting for a wire transfer scamWe are small new firm engaged in export of goods to overseas outside my country. Out of the Vortex
Out of the Vortex Out of the Vortex Out of the VortexEngineers have known about vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) for at least 500 years. Leonardo da Vinci observed them in the form of Aeolian Tones, sounds created by wind passing over a wire of the correct diameter and tension, and in the vortices swirling behind the piers of a bridge. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, John Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) and Theodore von Krmn discovered that strings in a wind move perpendicular to the flow of air. This interaction between the fluid and the structure occurs because of nonlinear resonance of cylinders or spheres through vortex-shedding lock-in. That is, the period at which vortices form and shed synchronize with the side-to-side motion of the bluff body.VIVs of circular cylinders occur over a very large range of Reynolds numbers. Experiments have shown that VIVs can be affected by the condition of the cylinder surface, vorticity in the ambient flow, and fluid conditions affecting water viscosity such as salinity and temperature.Amplifying Mechanical EnergyVIVs arent just an idle curiosity. A dramatic example of their power occurred in 1940. A newly completed bridge across the Tacoma Narrows in Washington state known to oscillate and twist during stiff winds shook itself apart after a morning of persistent motions of aboutone meter. An investigation demonstrated that the collapse was due to VIV.Because of the disruptive power of VIVs, engineers have long been interested in suppressing them in everyday objects such as car antennas, flagpoles, traffic-light posts, buildings, and cooling towers. Hundreds of patents on VIV unterdrckung are based on devices such as helical strakes, large extrusions, fairings, and weathervaning fairings.Considering the disruptive power of VIVs, its amazing that until recently, no one has tried to harness their power for something productive. At the University of Michigan, beginning in 2004 and with the help of doctoral student Kamal Rag havan, we showed the feasibility of exploiting VIVs for renewable energy. I filed for several patents in the mid-2000s (the first of which was granted in 2009), and in 2005, I started a company, Vortex Hydro Energy, with backing from the Office of Technology Transfer of the University of Michigan.Vortices created in flowing water can pull cylinders up and down with great force.VIVACE, ma non troppoOur principal invention was a hydrokinetic energy technology that we named the Vortex Induced Vibration for Aquatic Clean Energy converter (VIVACE). As we envision it, a system would consist of a three-dimensional array of long cylinders, each attached to an electrical or hydrolic power take-off system. Water flowing over the cylinders creates vortices that cause the cylinders to oscillate, and converts some of the horizontal hydrokinetic energy to mechanical energy. The attached power take-off system captures this energy and uses it to turn an electric generator.VIVACE provides many advan tages over conventional water-based power generation. The VIVACE converter doesnt need to impound water behind a dam to create a head. Water is allowed to flow freely over the cylinders. In contrast to hydrokinetic technologies the converter does not use a turbine, making it safer for aquatic life that swim past or through it. Equally important ocean currents and river flows are much more predictable and reliable than waves, wind, or solar activity. Moreover, VIVACE is scalable from low-watt through gigawatt-sized installations, where the science and engineering remain the same.VIVACE converters may be set up in any flowing water, including rivers and the undersides of semi-submersible ocean platforms.A Matter of DensityFor a given amount of infrastructure, VIVACE creates an amazing quantity of power. The comparison with wind power is illustrative as both methods capture power from a fluid. It becomes immediately apparent that wind begins with a disadvantage as, compared to flowing water, wind has a low power density. Since water is 830 times denser than air, the power density of a VIV-based device is significantly higher than for a wind turbine. Our experiments show that a VIVACE converter in water flowing at 1.3 meters per second has a power density of 185 watts per cubic meter, about 14,600 times greater than todays state-of-the-art wind farm. And unlike wind turbines, which require careful location to exploit favorable wind conditions and to avoid unfavorable interactions with humans and wildlife, a VIVACE converter can be placed in almost any type of free-flowing water. The water must be deep enough to permit the safe passage of boats, and to avoid interaction between the wake of the converter and both the surface and the riverbed or seafloor.Environmental and licensing issues must be worked out, as well as optimizing VIVACE, but we have no doubt that the converter can operate in real-life conditions as expected. Much the way that power from hydroelectric dams transformed the western U.S. during the middle part of the 20th century, we believe VIVACE has the vermgen to revolutionize the renewable power industry in this century.Adapted from Out of the Vortex, by Michael Bernitsas, University of Michigan, ASME Fellow, for Mechanical Engineering, April 2010.Considering amazing disruptive power of VIVs, its amazing that until recently, no one has tried to harness their power for good.

Family Medical Leave Guidelines for Expectant Parents
Family Medical Leave Guidelines for Expectant Parents Family Medical Leave Guidelines for Expectant Parents Just discovered that you or your significant other are expecting a baby or adopting a child soon? Congratulations! You are about to enter parenthood - one of the most exciting phases of adult life. If you or your spouse or covered same-sex partner are working presently, you may be aware that you could be eligible to take some time off to recover after the birth or to handle the details of the adoption, and to care for your new bundle of joy. You can also maintain your employee benefits during this time. The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is something you will want to ask your employer about as soon as possible to make this a smooth transition for your family. Learn About the Family Medical Leave Act The FMLA is a workplace law that enables eligible employees of covered employers to take up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid, job-protected leave for qualifying life events, such as starting a family. Eligible employees are those who work for a private employer with at least 50 employees within 75 miles, or a school or government agency, and someone who works at least 1250 hours during a 12-month period preceding the leave. That is around 24 hours per week if you worked for at least a year, so even if you work part-time or as a seasonal worker, you could be eligible for this benefit. Keep in mind that these 12 months do not need to be consecutive, so if you worked for 3 years, and then took a leave for 12 weeks, then returned to work for 7 months, you could still be approved for an FMLA leave. Also, if your private employer is not covered under FMLA, you could still be eligible under state laws. An FMLA leave may be granted if you: Are expecting the birth of a child and will be caring for the child following the birthAre in the process of placing a child for adoption or foster care, or adopting or becoming a foster parent Notifying the HR Department is Vital Itâs important to notify the human resource department at your place of employment as soon as you know you may need an FMLA leave under this arrangement. Why? This enables your employer to arrange for staffing coverage during the time that you will be out of work. It also enables your employer to coordinate your employee benefits so there is no break in coverage for you or your dependents during this time. You may notify your HR department in writing and obtain the necessary medical documentation needed to validate your requests such as a doctorâs note or lawyerâs statement on letterhead indicating your approximate leave dates and return to work date. You can ask for this to be held confidentially in your employee file. Next Steps Once You Are Granted an FMLA Leave Request Once you are approved for an FMLA leave period, you will want to contact your employee benefits administrator to find out what additional benefits or information you may need. Find out what health coverage you have, what it covers, and how you can add your new child to your policy. You will also want to coordinate your work tasks and schedule with your immediate supervisor and the human resource team. Since some of the time you are on leave may be unpaid, you will also want to talk with your human resource and benefits administrator about any paid time off or other benefits you may be entitled to, such as adoption fee reimbursement. Special Considerations for Pregnant Workers If you are pregnant and need special accommodation to make your work environment safer or more comfortable, including any schedule adjustments or requests to telecommute, you may qualify for support under the EEOC, including the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Your employer cannot terminate you or threaten your job in any way during this time. Your employer may stay in contact with you during this time, but cannot ask you to conduct business or perform work tasks during an FMLA leave. According to the EEOC, âif you are unable to perform your job due to a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth, your employer must treat you in the same way any other disabled employee is treatedâ, therefore you may also qualify for short term disability benefits. Remember, an FMLA leave is approved by state and federal workplace laws, so if you are finding it difficult to get this processed in a timely or satisfactory manner, you may contact the US Department of Labor division for your state. Be sure to learn more about your rights and responsibilities by downloading your free copy of the Family and Medical Leave Act Employee Guide.

Management Basics and the Manager Job Role
Management Basics and the Manager Job Role Management Basics and the Manager Job Role What is management? What do managers do? How do I manage? These are standard questions that most of us in the management profession have been asked more than once and they are questions we asked once in our careers, too. Here is a basic look at management- a virtual Management 101. Art and Science Management is both an art and a science. It is the art of making people more effective than they would have been without you and there is a science to how you do that. There are four basic pillars of the managers role: plan, organize, direct, and monitor. Maximize Effectiveness To illustrate the benefits of an effective manager, consider this scenario: Four workers can make 6 units in an eight-hour shift without a manager. If you are hired to manage them and they still make 6 units a day, what is your benefit to the business? On the other hand, if they now make 8 units per day, you- as the manager- have value. The same analogy applies to service, retail, teaching, or any other kind of work. Can your group handle more customer calls with you than without? Sell higher value merchandise? Impart knowledge more effectively? That is the value of management- making a group of individual workers more effective. Plan If management starts with planning, good management starts with good planning. Without a plan, you will never succeed. If you happen to make it to the goal, it will have been by luck or chance and is not repeatable. You may make it as a flash-in-the-pan- an overnight sensation- but you will never have the track record of accomplishments of which success is made. Figure out what your goal is, or listen when your boss tells you, then figure out the best way to get there. What resources do you have? What can you get? Compare the strengths and weaknesses of individuals and other resources. Look at all the probable scenarios and develop a plan for them. Figure out the worst possible scenario and plan for that, too. Evaluate your different plans and develop what, in your best judgment, will work the best and what you will do if it doesnt. TIP: One of the most often overlooked management planning tools is the most effective. Ask the people doing the work for their input. Organize Now that you have a plan, you have to make it happen. Is everything ready ahead of your group so the right stuff will get to your group at the right time? Is your group prepared to do its part of the plan? Is the downstream organization ready for what your group will deliver and when it will arrive? Find out if your workers are training and motivated and if they have the necessary equipment for following through on your plan. Your plan should include solutions for any eventuality, so prepare to have the necessary spare parts for the equipment. Ensure that purchasing has ordered the material and it is the right stuff and it will arrive in time to keep your plan on schedule. Do the legwork to make sure everything needed to execute the plan is ready to go or will be when it is needed. Check back to make sure that everyone understands their role and the importance of their role in the overall success. Direct Everything is in place and it is now time to flip the ON switch- tell people what they need to do. We like to think of this part like conducting an orchestra: Everyone in the orchestra has the music in front of them and they know which section is playing which piece and when. They know when to come in, what to play, and when to stop again. The conductor cues each section to make the music happen- thats your job here. Youve given all your musicians (workers) the sheet music (the plan), you have the right number of musicians (workers) in each section (department), and youve arranged the sections on stage so the music will sound best (you have organized the work). Now you need only to tap the podium lightly with your baton to get their attention and give the downbeat. Monitor Now that you have everything moving, you have to keep an eye on things. Make sure everything is going according to the plan and, when it isnt going according to plan, step in and adjust the plan. Problems will come up- someone will get sick; a part wont be delivered on time; a key customer will go bankrupt- but that is why you developed a contingency plan in the first place. You, as the manager, have to always be aware of whats going on so you can make any necessary adjustments. Monitoring is an iterative process- when something is out of sync, you need to plan a fix, organize the resources to make it work, direct the people who will make it happen, and continue to monitor the effect of the change. A Rewarding Experience Managing people is not easy; however, it can be done successfully and it can be a very rewarding experience. Remember that management, like any other skill, is something that you can improve at with study and practice.

Best Career Advice from Michelle Obama, Jeff Bezos more
Best Career Advice from Michelle Obama, Jeff Bezos more Best Career Advice from Michelle Obama, Jeff Bezos more 2018 was quite a year. There was no shortage of headline-making moments or reasons to grab your smartphone to instantly like, share or comment. Amongst the yearâs highs were also some very defining moments for industry titans and influential people. And along with that, pivotal moments for everyday people like you and me. Career highs and professional opportunities abounded. Looking back, we took stock of some of the best career advice of the year. Here are five people who share five gems of advice that will inspire us today and into 2019. In a recent shareholder letter , Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos borrow down two basic kinds of decisions you can make: those that are easy to reverse and those that are nearly impossible to reverse. He advises not to be paralyzed by doubt, but to clearly evaluate whatâs in front of you. âSome decisions are consequential and irreversible or nearly irreversible - one-way doors - and these decisions must be made methodically, carefully, slowly, with great deliberation and consultation. If you walk through and donât like what you see on the other side, you canât get back to where you were before. We can call these Type 1 decisions,â Bezos writes. âBut most decisions arenât like that - they are changeable, reversible - theyâre two-way doors. If youâve made a sub-optimal Type 2 decision, you donât have to live with the consequences for that long. You can reopen the door and go back through. Type 2 decisions can and should be made quickly by high judgment individuals or small groups. As organizations get larger, there seems to be a tendency to use the heavyweight Type 1 decision-making process on most decisions, including many Type 2 decisions. The end result of this is slowness, unthoughtful risk aversion, failure to experiment sufficiently, and consequently diminished invention. Weâll have to figure out how to fight that tendency.â At the first-ever Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa in December, Oprah Winfrey spoke to thousands on what would have been Nelson Mandelaâs 100th birthday. While speaking about the legacy of the former South African President and activist, Oprah shared a tidbit that we can all apply to our careers. In her speech, she said , âLet me tell you, no matter whatâs going down in your life, thereâs always somebody out there whoâs not as blessed as you have been.â Oprah continued, âIf you do even one small thing every day, youâll be building your own legacy. Because as Maya Angelou taught me: Your legacy isnât some big grand gesture thatâs waiting to happen, your legacy is every life you touch. So Iâve been fortunate to witness up close and personal that when you help someone else, your blessings return to you 10 times.â Former First Lady Michelle Obama has a track record that anyone would be envious of: Princeton University undergrad, Harvard Law School, jobs in corporate law and public service, wife, mother, and, of course, First Lady. And while it may seem like her path has been a straight one, she insists in her new book âBecomingâ that it doesnât have to be. âIn the book, I take you on the journey of who that little striving star-getter became, which is what a lot of hard-driving kids become: a box checker,â Obama tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview. âGet good grades: check. Apply to the best schools, get into Princeton: check. I wasnât a swerver. I wasnât somebody that was going to take risks,â she says. However, Obama admits she wasnât happy. âI narrowed myself to being this thing I thought I should be. It took loss- losses in my life that made me think, Have you ever stopped to think about who you wanted to be? And I realized I had not. I was sitting on the 47th floor of an office building, going over cases and writing memos. I was like, âI canât do this for the rest of my life. I canât sit in a room and look at documents.ââ So what changed? âBarack Obama taught me how to swerve,â admitted the First Lady. Winfrey chimes in, âWhat I loved about it is, it says to every person reading the book: You have the right to change your mind.â When youâre a more seasoned professional, you have experienced both the ups and the downs of professional life. You may have been laid off, fired, missed out on a promotion or made a seemingly career-defining mistake. However, Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu insists that fear should not paralyze you forever. Before directing the box-office hit, Chu directed the failed remake of 2015âs Jem and the Holograms . It scored a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and was pulled from theaters early. Getting back into the directorâs chair on the book-to-screen adaptation of the Kevin Kwan hit was daunting, needless to say. âThe fear of doing [âJemâ] again was definitely present,â he said . âI always told myself after âJem,â I donât want fear to change my choices. Fear is a destruction of creativity. Any time I had a fear about this movie I would go to that idea, donât let âJemâ determine your choices here. You were destined to be here and do this movie.â Three simple words pack a lot of punch when delivered by one of the wealthiest and most successful investors in the world. Warren Buffet shared this quick, but meaningful, insight with a start-up co-founder when asked for the advice heâd give to new graduates about to enter the workplace. Buffet responded: Invest in yourself. The chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway then continued, âThe one easy way to become worth 50 percent more than you are now at least is to hone your communication skills - both written and verbal. If you canât communicate, itâs like winking at a girl in the dark - nothing happens. You can have all the brainpower in the world but you have to be able to transmit it. And the transmission is communication.â Buffettâs advice speaks volumes. Investing in yourself and in your communication abilities can take you from 0 to 100 instantly. You will be able to deliver a better elevator pitch, answer an interview question perfectly, pitch an idea to an investor, and make the case for a raise or promotion. Take time today to internalize the advice from seasoned pros and make tomorrow your best day ever!

FBI Directors secret Twitter account shows why you have no internet privacy
FBI Director's secret Twitter account shows why you have no internet privacy FBI Director's secret Twitter account shows why you have no internet privacy On Wednesday at a leadership dinner, FBI Director James Comey dangled an irresistible carrot in front of reporters: he had recently acquired a secret Twitter account, he said, and he further let on that he had a private Instagram account with ânine followers.âWhen Comey spoke about his commitment to his own internet privacy and promised that â[n]obody is getting inâ to find him online, that challenge proved irresistible to one journalist. There is no such thing as a secret social media accountMany influential CEOs and celebrities maintain âsecretâ social media accounts. One of the most famous is the singer Adele, who has said her official account is now controlled by her managers because of her habit of âmouthyâ drunk tweeting and she now has a private account she uses to lurk. Many celebrities are rumored to have secret Facebook accounts, and hedge fund managers are said to be lurking in undisclosed Twitter accounts, where they can see financial news quietly.Letâs clear up one thing: there is no such thing as a secret social media account. If youâre on social media, youâre findable by anyone determined enough. That was the case with James Comey. We all leave digital breadcrumbs that reveal who we areGizmodoâs Ashley Feinberg described her path to discovering the FBI directorâs secret Twitter account. She started by looking up his family on Twitter, which led to his sonâs locked Instagram account. Due to Instagramâs algorithm, all it took was four hours of internet sleuthing for Feinberg to follow Brien Comeyâs Instagram to his fatherâs anonymous account, exposing @projectexile7.How Feinberg knew it was Comey: even the head of the FBI canât resist leaving breadcrumbs on social media, and he had linked his secret account to his real-life interests. Feinberg wrote there was only one Comey account that matched the FBI Directorâs description of having only nine followers: reinholdniebuhr. Hmm! Comey wrote his senior thesis on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr at the College of William and Mary. HMM!From there, the coincidences kept piling up. A tweeter using the name Reinhold Niebuhr was living at the handle @projectexile7. Project Exile was the name of a federal program to deter criminals from gun offenses that Comey helped create. This âReinhold Niebuhrâ was only following reporters covering the FBI and a notable friend of James Comey.Case closed. The FBI said it had no comment, but for me and all the Nancy Drews of the internet, the evidence was convincing enough.Comey himself has not publicly commented on his alleged outing, but according to one journalist, before @projectexile7 went underground and locked his account, he tipped his cap to Feinberg, sending her a link to the FBI job boards site. If it is Comey, the response is light and clever.https://twitter.com/samknight1/status/847607770182336512Of course, Comeyâs case has an important lesson even for those of us who donât run federal agencies: treat social media very carefully, because your colleagues, your bosses and maybe even the whole world could get to see it. There is no such thing as true privacy in a public forum. On the internet, no one knows youâre a dog- but algorithms already know everything about youYou can be the nationâs top executive in charge of protecting our cybersecurity and you can still get foiled by an algorithm. It didnât matter that the account of Comeyâs son was locked down and private. Once you sign up for social media accounts, you open up your contact lists - including family members - to their algorithms. An algorithm working under Instagramâs âopen and connectedâ mandate can innocuously reveal to others your friends and familiesâ accounts that it thinks you might want to follow. The intent is benign: like Facebook and Twitter algorithms, Instagramâs âSuggestionsâ feature is assuming we all want to be more connected with everyone.Techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci expl ains how Instagramâs business argument wars with usersâ privacy concerns: â[P]rivacy and boundaries around information are not stable- they are not stable because networks leak information; because your acts reveal deeper dynamics; because people like you give hints about what you will do; because this is all asymmetric: there is a business model, and then there is us, in the middle of all of this, connecting to one another because that is what people do.âNothing is secretComey is the latest high-profile case in a long line of people who thought they could get away with a private social media account. In 2012, an Obama aide thought he could badmouth his boss under the secret handle of @natsecwonk. For more than two years, it worked and Jofi Joseph could snarkily tweet: ââHas sh- y staff.â #ObamaInThreeWords.â But using Josephâs travel and shopping habits, the White House eventually pinned the account to Joseph and fired him. There is one notable success story: in 2 011, the National Labor Relations Board sided with an ambulance driver who got fired after she vented about her boss on Facebook. Because the woman was part of a union, the NLRB got the womanâs employer to settle and revise its âoverly broad rulesâ on employees discussing wages, hours, and working conditions outside of work. How to keep some privacy onlineThe big takeaway? Nothing is secret once posted on a public network. If you do want to protect your privacy, your best bet is not to be on social media, and certainly not to talk about your secret accounts. You can also take these steps for digital privacy endorsed by the Electronic Freedom Foundation. As James Comey himself once said, âThere is no such thing as absolute privacy in America; there is no place outside of judicial reach.â No wonder that, after Feinbergâs story came out, @projectexile7 locked his account.
